Each year people across the world celebrate Easter, to commemorate when the resurrection of Jesus Christ is said to have taken place; three days after Jesus was crucified by the Romans and died in roughly 30 A.D. The date changes each year because Easter always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the northern hemisphere’s spring equinox (when day and night are equal length). Easter 2023 falls on 9th April (Easter Sunday), meaning Good Friday is on 7th April and Easter Monday is 10th April. Across the whole weekend, celebrations take place and Easter food is eaten during the surrounding days too.
Similarly to Christmas and Halloween, which have evolved over the last couple of centuries, Christian and non-Christian elements have blended to create a mix of new and old Easter traditions everyone can enjoy. Common traditions include Easter eggs, decorating eggs, the Easter bunny, hot cross buns, fashion parades (such as hat decorating), Easter ham, and the traditional Easter Sunday dinner.
