Mother's Day is celebrated across the world on different dates. In America, Mother's Day was not celebrated until 1908, when Anna Jarvis, a woman from West Virgina, pushed for Mother's Day to become a holiday following the loss of her own mother. It was finally made an official holiday in 1914, by President Woodrow Wilson.
In Britain, however, Mothering Sunday originates from 16th Century Christianity, when those who had moved away returned to the 'mother' church in their hometown to give thanks to Mary, the mother of Jesus, on the fourth Sunday of Lent. In modern times, this is now known as Mother's Day and has become a marked date when families not only celebrate the mothers that raised them with gifts but, they also show other strong, female figures in their lives their appreciation.
