Pizza Dough Recipe

For a fully authentic pizza experience, why not make your entire pizza from scratch? It’s easier than you might think. Homemade pizzas are perfect for any occasion, from date night to a party buffet. This easy pizza dough recipe typically makes enough dough for two 12-inch pizzas or four 8-inch pizzas.

For your pizza dough base, you’ll need:

  • 280g plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 180ml warm water
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast ### How to make pizza dough:
  • Mix the warm water, sugar and yeast in a bowl, and let the mixture sit for 10 minutes until foamy.
  • Combine the flour and salt in a larger bowl. Make a well in the centre and pour in the water, sugar and yeast mixture, as well as olive oil. Stir well until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about five minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, and cover with a clean kitchen towel or cling film.
  • Let the dough proof in a warm place for up to one and a half hours, or until doubled in size.
  • Once risen, divide it into desired portions. Your pizza dough is now ready to roll, add toppings and cook. See below for pizza topping ideas to try.

Don’t forget, if you don’t have time to make your own pizza dough, why not use naan bread as a base for a unique naanizza dish? This goat's cheese and caramelised onion naanizza recipe is one of our favourites.

Pizza Recipe FAQs

Can you freeze pizza dough?

Yes. Batch making pizza dough and freezing it for when you need it is a great way to save time and reduce food waste. Remember to let the dough fully rise before you freeze it and then divide it into portioned pieces before freezing. Pizza dough can be frozen for up to three months and simply needs to be thawed in the fridge thoroughly before you cook.

Can you reheat pizza?

You can reheat pizza the next day, as long as you make sure that you heat to a temperature that would kill any bacteria off. If you are reheating multiple slices, the oven is the best way to go.

What pizza sauces should I use?

Tomato-based sauce is most common on pizzas, however, there are many different options to try if you’d like to make your pizza recipe a little different. Pesto, garlic and oil, BBQ sauce, buffalo sauce or alfredo/white sauce are all options to give your pizza a more unique taste. In some cases, chocolate spread has even been known to be used on pizzas for a sweeter alternative.
