Feta Recipes - Over 200 Feta Dishes You’ll Be Eager to Try

From salads and stews, to tacos and pizza, here are the feta recipes you’ll be adding to your weekly rotation from now on.

What is Feta Cheese? Taste, Texture and More

Made from sheep's milk or a mix of sheep and goat's milk, feta is a versatile cheese, favoured in savoury meals, as well as some pastry recipes. This soft, white cheese boasts a crumbly, slightly grainy texture, is aged in brine and comes readily available in large blocks.

Due to its creamy, crumbly mouthfeel and slightly salty taste, it’s popular in many salads and stews, as well as Mexican dishes like these breaded chicken tacos and Greek dishes such as these pork koftas.

Unlike other cheeses, such as cheddar, mozzarella and goat’s cheese, feta doesn't melt, giving you a unique texture in dishes such as pastas and pizzas. Instead of the usual gooey cheese, you'll enjoy delicious, chewy chunks that you can really sink your teeth into.

There are many different ways to enjoy feta cheese, with one of the most popular being baking. If you’re wondering how to bake feta, follow these simple instructions for perfect results every time:

  • Preheat your oven to 200°C (180°C fan assisted)
  • Place the whole block of feta in a small baking dish, and season with a drizzle of olive oil, some dried oregano, red pepper flakes and garlic (optional). Add cherry tomatoes or olives around the feta cheese if desired.
  • Bake for around 20-25 minutes, or until the feta is soft and slightly golden on top.

Feta Recipe FAQs

Can you freeze feta cheese?

You can freeze feta cheese, and it will last in the freezer for up to two months. However, once you thaw your feta cheese, it will become drier and crumblier than fresh feta, so although it’s a great way to avoid food waste, it’s not 100% recommended for the tastiest feta recipes. If you do decide to freeze your feta cheese, we advise you store it in a freezer bag and expel the air before freezing, for best results.

What is feta cheese good with?

Feta cheese pairs well with fresh vegetables, particularly in salads, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and olives. This is because feta’s tangy, slightly salty flavour and crumbly, creamy mouthfeel enhances their natural freshness and crunch. Feta cheese complements grains like quinoa and pasta, where its creamy yet crumbly texture adds a delightful contrast and depth of flavour.

How long does feta last in the fridge?

Once opened, feta cheese typically lasts for up to seven days in the fridge. If you are unsure, the texture and look of your feta can indicate whether it is okay to consume or not. When feta spoils, it becomes rubbery and tough, loses its moisture and can have visible signs of mould.

Can you melt feta cheese?

Unlike many other cheeses, feta doesn't melt, giving you a unique texture on many dishes. Instead of the usual gooey cheese, you'll enjoy delicious, chewy chunks that you can really sink your teeth into.
