Paneer Recipe FAQs
What is paneer?
Paneer is a versatile, fresh cheese that’s commonly used in Indian dishes. Renowned for its mild flavour and firm but crumbly texture, paneer lends itself to being marinated in spices and used to make delicious curries.
Can you freeze paneer?
Yes, you can freeze paneer cheese. In fact, it’s an excellent way to reduce your food waste and extend its shelf life. Mimi’s top tip about freezing paneer, is to wrap it in a single layer of cling film or in a plastic zip-lock freezer bag, followed by a layer of foil, to maintain its fresh taste and texture. Let it thaw in the fridge for six-eight hours before using, for best results.
What does paneer taste like?
Paneer has a mild, creamy flavour, making it perfect for adding spices and rich sauces. Its taste makes it extremely versatile in cooking; from spicy curries, to fresh salads and hearty wrap fillings, paneer may well become your new go-to cheese.
What is paneer made of?
Paneer cheese is made from either cow's milk or buffalo milk. The milk is first curdled by heating, and then an acid is added. Due to the fact that acid is added, rather than rennet, it doesn't melt, but holds its shape. This allows it to be simmered, fried or grilled without liquefying, making it perfect for many dishes, including a wide range of curries.
