Halloumi Recipe FAQs
Why does halloumi not melt?
Halloumi has a higher than usual melting point, meaning you can grill and fry it, without it melting. Despite the exterior crisping off, the inside will remain soft and gooey.
What does halloumi taste like?
Unlike most other cheeses, halloumi has a distinct salty and sharp flavour, and almost rubbery and ‘squeaky’ texture once cooked, in the best possible way.
Can you freeze halloumi?
Yes, you can freeze halloumi. It’s a great way to cut down on food waste and prolong the cheese’s shelf life. It’s worth noting that the texture and flavour may alter slightly once thawed, but is still perfectly edible once cooked.
How long to cook halloumi in an air fryer?
Prepare your halloumi sticks before cooking for 12 minutes on 180°C in an air fryer, turning halfway through, until your halloumi fries are golden and crispy.
How do you soften halloumi?
Some halloumi recipes require you to soften your halloumi before cooking. To do this, place your halloumi slices in a bowl, and pour freshly boiled water over the top. Allow to soak for around 20 minutes, and then pat dry with kitchen roll.
